Do Deep Tissue Massages Hurt?

You can experience some discomfort or even some pain at certain points during the treatment, as the massage therapist works on places where adhesions or scar tissue are present. Pain is not always pleasant and it is not an indication that the massage should work. Yes, the body may become rigid in response to pain, making it more difficult for the therapist to penetrate deeper muscles.

When you feel discomfort during massage you should always tell your massage therapist. When the superficial muscles are stressed the therapist may change the procedure or help strengthen the tissues.
